HISSTORY |
From 1987-1989, psych-poppers The 27 Various were Lori's backing band, and during that period recorded songs for an album that was never released, save for a few tunes that appeared on her 1989 EP, Introducing Lori Wray. The Jayhawks backed her up for a song featured on the same EP, and Hisstory includes previously unreleased tracks from the recording sessions with both bands (and others), as well as demos, live performances and project contributions from 1987-1999. The "hiss" in Hisstory refers to the fact that the comp's tracks, by and large, were transferred from cassette to CD (hence, tape "hiss"), with high-quality results, thanks to an excellent engineer and a kickass computer.
Jay says: "North Dakota can be a big empty place ... It's not a place you hear a lot of songs about (maybe a few cowboy songs or something like 'Wichita Lineman'). Here's a few for the catalog."
SAFELY CRASS |
Though shed spent a dozen years in Minneapolis honing a voice to be reckoned with, Lori had only a handful of singles and demo casettes to prove it to those who'd never seen her live performances. That changed in 1998 with the long-awaited release of her debut CD, Safely Crass. Hailed as Stellar by the Minneapolis Star Tribune, and "A wonderfully produced collection of sterling pop nuggets" by the St. Paul Pioneer Press-PioneerPlanet, Safely Crass showcases the singing and songwriting of one of the Twin Cities most endearing and enduring talents. The ten songs on Safely Crass range from thoughtful acoustic musings to alt-country ballads to almost straightforward rock & roll, and the disc culminates in a strange-but-true tale of Loris mom and a certain fading Hollywood legend.
